Ibiza, La Isla Blanca, or the White Island

Ibiza is the most extreme of the Islands, in landscape and visitors. The Greeks called Ibiza and Formentera the Islas Pitiusas (Islands of Pine Trees). Amazing cove beaches, high towering cliffs, densely covered with pine trees, offer the perfect place to spend your holidays. In the 60's the first hippies came to Ibiza attracted by the beautiful landscape and the laid back way of life. Ever since the Island has developed its club life and is now well-known for its summer club parties which attract large numbers of tourists.

Nevertheless, the Island of Ibiza is internationally known not only because of its non-stop party atmosphere, but also for its cultural and natural features. A great part of the Island is listed under the United Nations World Heritage Sites. The treasures underlying this land are innumerable. The stunning coastline with its white sanded beaches, the traditional scenery of the quaint villages and remote country houses and villas has remained intact, retaining the unique character of this Island.

Ibiza is also the perfect destination for those seeking to enjoy water sports, as surf, snorkeling and scuba diving, especially after spending time on the beach during those sun-drenched days. The island has several sports facilities along its seashore and many tourists and locals use this great opportunity to cool themselves down when the sun is really burning.

Ibiza Town

The capital of Ibiza is Ibiza Town, Eivissa Vila in Catalan. It is one of Europe's oldest towns. It used to be the capital of the Pine-islands, formed by Ibiza and Formentera.

Dalt Vila is the old town of Ibiza Town on top of a hill. The dramatic main entrance is up a slope, crossing a drawbridge through the Portal de Tablas, flanked by mighty statues in roman stone, entering into an ancient cobbled stone courtyard, giving immediately on to the ‘Plaza de Vila' or main square. Stroll around, exploring the narrow, winding, steep cobbled streets and magnificent views from the breaks in the high ramparts and the vast terraces at each level (Dalt Vila actually means 'High Town').

Sa Penya is an area below Dalt Vila, this used to be a fishermen's area, but still is one of the most colourful parts of the city. La Marina is situated along the shore and is the place to be to enjoy yourself at night.

Beaches

Ibiza's coastline is all about beautiful Mediterranean wide sanded beaches, towering cliffs, dense pine forests, impressive sunsets and much more. More than 50 beaches can be found here. There are many hidden coves around the islands coastline, which  have crystal clear waters and fine white sanded beaches. Ibiza's ‘chiringuitos', which are the traditional beach bars, are welcoming you to enjoy a cool drink while you can watch one of the world's most breathtaking sunsets.

A few of our favorite beaches are:

Cala D'hort is a small beach on the West of the island that has little to offer but it's beauty. From the beach there is a lovely view to the island Es Vedra but apart from that, all it has to offer is sand, sea and a sizzling sun.

Cala Salada is one of the island's smaller beaches situated in a cove on the East side of the island. There is not a lot going on here but it is beautiful and peaceful. The beach is sandy with a few rocks around the shore.

Benirras is one of the most amazing places on the island. Inhabited by hippies and locals, Benirras is a cultural lightyear away from the likes of Playa D'en Bossa. The best time to visit is at sunset as the hippies bang their drums as the sun goes down - a real Ibiza 'experience'.

Nature

Far from the hectic atmosphere of the nightlife, Ibiza also offers a much calmer side, framed by a gentle landscape of serene rural beauty. The Northwest coast is rough and ideal for people looking for tranquility and very suitable for hiking. Many authentic rural finca style hotels can be found here.

Mysterious Ibizan landmark Isla Es Vedra, rock island, in a crystal clear sea and surrounded by many legends, is a great option for a pleasant boat trip. You can enjoy great views on Es Vedra from Cala d'Hort beach or you can climb the Torre de Pirate at the Mirador des Savinar, you will not be disappointed!

Towns and villages

Ibiza is only 45 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide, so any point on the island is never more than one hour's drive away! It is very worthwile to discover the villages of Ibiza. They are small, but have a certain charm, which reminds you of the earlier days, before the hippies came to Ibiza. They are of a unique kind. Take some time and discover the beauty of a slow pace of life.

A few of our favorites are:

Santa Inés, is a wonderful place to visit in order to discover the real Ibiza of the Ibicencan farmers, far away from the hustle-and-bustle of Ibiza Town and San Antonio. The surrounding countryside is simply breathtaking, with fields of orange, lemon and almond trees. When the Almond trees are at bloom in February, this is one of the prettiest displays of nature you will ever see, as the whole of the valley is swathed in a covering of silvery-white and is absolutely worth a visit.

San Carlos, is a rather small yet very well-known village north of Santa Eulalia. It has a long-standing reputation as a meeting point for the hippies and the foreign residents of the island, who gather over a cup of coffee or a snack in one of the bars, or at the hippy market every saturday in the Las Dalias restaurant.

Santa Gertrudis, This charming village lies on the geographical middle point of the island.
There is little more than a church, a few bars, some very interesting shops, and a wonderful feeling of peace and quiet, far away from big-city life.

San Joan, in the north, really is the last village in Ibiza. There's not a lot going on in San Juan, and that is its main attraction! Visitors come here to step back in time to the days when the island was a quiet Spanish backwater. It's also hippie headquarters for those who have moved to the island to seek an alternative lifestyle embracing spiritual philosophy and a healthier way of life.
