Instead of mourning the end to summer, let’s embrace everything wonderful autumn has to offer! Here are 10 of our favourite healthy and fitnessy things we love about this season:
1. We love Pumpkins!
Probably the most jolly, fun and vibrant vegetable to ever grace your local supermarket. Excellent for soups and, of course, pumpkin carving, but don’t forget pumpkin bread, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin pie, pumpkin risotto, pumpkin beer — the options are endless! It’s finally pumpkin season, and the reasons to celebrate are many. Pumpkins are not only delicious yet also super healthy! To name just a few health benefits they:
- Keep eyesight sharp; a cup of cooked, mashed pumpkin contains more than 200 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which aids vision, particularly in dim light.
- They aid weight loss; Pumpkin is an often-overlooked source of fiber, but with three grams per one-cup serving and only 49 calories, it can keep you feeling full for longer on fewer calories.
- Pumpkins may reduce cancer risk; like their orange comrades the sweet potato, the carrot and the butternut squash (to name a few), pumpkins boast the antioxidant beta-carotene, which may play a role in cancer prevention, according to the National Cancer Institute.
- Pumpkin seeds can help your heart; Nuts and seeds, including those of pumpkins, are naturally rich in certain plant-based chemicals called phytosterols that have been shown in studies to reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

2. We love Hot chocolate!
While we’re on the topic of food, we love that colder days mean warmer beverages… and the chance to indulge in a cup of hot cocoa! The antioxidant concentration in hot cocoa is almost twice as strong as red wine. Cocoa’s concentration of health boosting antioxidants was two to three times stronger than that of green tea and four to five times stronger than that of black tea.
3. We love jumping on leaves!
There’s something really pretty about seeing the leaves go orange, slowly fall off and then assemble into a big pile of reds, oranges and browns on the ground. You can have heaps of fun with piles of fallen leaves. Jump, play, move, enjoy!!
4. We love Fitness tights!
It’s time to get those full length compression tights out again! Compression tights walk the line between fashion and fitness, and make legs look oh-so-wonderfully toned, all while making that recovery from exercising that much easier: several studies found that wearing full body compression garments during and after exercise reduces fatigue and muscle soreness.
5. We love Hot spas!
We at Spa in Spain of course love spas!! Besides being extremely relaxing, soaking in a long, hot spa is another great way to get some much needed muscle recovery and it improves your immune system. Summer’s extreme weather makes the idea of jumping into a hot spa quite unappealing. But once the weather has cooled down, make a time to soak in a hot pool of bubbles, break a sweat in the sauna or relax in the hamam. And if you don’t have access to a spa, a bubble bath is a great substitute!
6. We love Crisp air!
There is something so refreshing about stepping outside and taking a deep breath and the air is cool and sharp. None of this disgusting humid summer air, tinged with sweat and booze.
7. We love Misty Mornings!
Another perk of the cooling temperatures, longer nights and increased moisture in the air is a walk in the countryside on a misty autumnal morning. For sure you will find a stunning field, park or open space just ripe for an early morning excursion. So there’s no excuse for not heading out before the sun has had time to burn off all the lovely mist… Your early rise will be worth it!
8. We love the first bite of a juicy apple we literally just picked ourselves!
The word harvest comes from the Anglo-Saxon word haerfest meaning autumn and autumn really is a time of wild fruits aplenty. Blackberries, plums, apples, Sweet chestnuts and wild strawberries… All delicious and super healthy!! Fruit picking is one of our favourite autumn past-times and this late summer/early autumn fruit should be ripe and ready to pick right now!
9. We love not having to shave!
After months of shaving and waxing our legs, it’s nice to have a little break from regular hair removal – it’s just one of those things we take for granted in the cooler months. Hair removal can be fraught with health dangers, so enjoy the chance to give your body a recovery from the ingrown hairs, red skin and irritation.
10. We love empty gyms!
There’s little more satisfying than arriving at the gym to find that you have the entire place to yourself! If you are contemplating holding off until January 1st to join the gym and to take up a fitness routine, forget it. By joining now, you will allow yourself time and space to begin incorporating exercise into your daily routine in a stress-free environment. By the time January roles around, you will be much more inclined to stick it out!
We wish you all a wonderful and healthy autumn!!
