Cryotherapy: Fun and Energizing

Neel and I tried Cryotherapy a few weeks ago at Hotel Camiral, and it was an incredible experience. If you haven’t heard of it before, this therapy involves exposing your body to extremely cold temperatures—we were at -110°C—for a short time. This therapy is known for its powerful benefits for both body and mind.

What is Cryotherapy and Where Does It Come From?

Cryotherapy was first introduced in Japan in the 1970s by Dr. Toshima Yamaguchi to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Since then, it has become popular worldwide. The process is typically done in a cryotherapy chamber, where temperatures are set between -100°C and -140°C (-148°F to -220°F). Sessions are short, usually lasting only two to four minutes, but the effects of such intense cold can be profound.

The science behind cryotherapy revolves around how the body reacts to extreme cold. When exposed to these temperatures, the body enters a state of “fight or flight,” directing blood from the extremities to the core to protect vital organs. This process is believed to reduce inflammation, help in pain management, and speed up muscle recovery, which is why it’s popular among athletes. The cold can also stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” hormones, which may explain why many people report feeling a mood boost after their session. Some experts also believe cryotherapy can enhance skin health and boost metabolism.

Our Cryotherapy Experience

SISters in Wellness at Cryotherapy session

During our session, we stepped into the chamber with curiosity and a little bit of nervousness. First 30 seconds we stayed in the first room which had a temperature of -60ªC to get the body get used to the cold temperature, and then we moved straight away to the next room for 2,5 minutes, which had a temperature of -110ªC. The cold is intense, especially in your arms and legs. It feels like thousands of tiny needles pricking your skin—definitely something new!
But rather than standing still and enduring it, we decided to make it fun. We started dancing to The Weeknd´s ¨Blinding Lights¨, moving around in the chamber to keep warm, and before long, we were laughing and singing to distract ourselves from the freezing temperatures.

The Benefits of Moving During Cryotherapy

Moving during a Cryotherapy session not only helps distract from the cold, but it also boosts the health benefits. The cold makes your body work harder to stay warm, which speeds up your metabolism and burns more calories in a shorter time. Plus, exercise during the session improves blood circulation and enhances muscle recovery. It’s like getting the benefits of a workout and cryotherapy all at once!

Post-Cryotherapy: Clarity, Energy, and Deep Sleep

By the time our session ended, we stepped out of the chamber feeling thrilled. Our skin tingled, and we were filled with a sense of accomplishment and felt incredibly clear-headed and full of energy. The sensation of mental sharpness and physical rejuvenation lasted for hours. However, by nighttime, we were completely exhausted. The session left us so tired that we slept like babies that night. It was one of the best, most restful sleeps I’ve had in a long time.

Key Benefits of Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy has many health benefits, including:

  • Muscle recovery: Reduces soreness after workouts.
  • Reduced inflammation: Cold reduces swelling and promotes better blood flow.
  • Improved mood: Cold exposure increases endorphin levels.
  • Skin rejuvenation: Cryotherapy tightens skin and improves elasticity.
  • Calorie burning: You can burn up to 800 calories in a single session.

Try it for Yourself

Our experience at Hotel Camiral, was unforgettable. Not only did we feel amazing afterward, but we also had a lot of fun during the session. If you’re curious about trying this therapy, I highly recommend it!
