Why is it So Difficult to Get into an Exercise Regime and Stick to It?

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a hiking trip with my sister and some friends. We are a lively bunch, full of laughter and camaraderie, but also a bit out of shape. It became a running joke as we huffed and puffed our way up the trails, pondering about our younger, fitter days. By the time we reached the summit, we were determined: this was the wake-up call we needed. We vowed to start exercising regularly, dreaming of next year’s hiking trip and even contemplating the Spartan Race with enthusiasm that matched our youthful days.

We returned home charged with excitement, each one of us ready to transform our lives. For a week, we did really well! Morning runs, gym sessions, and shared playlists to keep the motivation high. But then, the inevitable happened… The enthusiasm started to fade, the gym visits became sporadic, and our once vibrant group chat turned silent. It was disappointing, but all too familiar. Why does this keep happening? Why is it so difficult to stick to an exercise regime?

The Enthusiasm Trap

When we first decide to get fit, the surge of enthusiasm is like a powerful wave. It’s exciting, and we feel invincible. However, this initial rush of motivation often fades as quickly as it comes. Real life kicks in with its responsibilities, and our lofty fitness goals get pushed to the back burner. The excitement of a new beginning is not enough to sustain long-term commitment.

The Busy Life Challenge

As middle-aged women, our lives are a tapestry of responsibilities. We juggle careers, family, social obligations, and perhaps even caring for aging parents. Exercise often feels like one more task on an already overflowing to-do list. The perceived lack of time can be a significant barrier to maintaining a regular exercise routine.

Physical and Mental Fatigue

Let’s face it, our bodies don’t bounce back like they used to. After a long day, the thought of exercising can feel more exhausting than invigorating. Physical fatigue, combined with the mental exhaustion of everyday stress, can sap the motivation needed to stay active. The couch and a good book or Netflix often seem much more appealing.

Lack of Immediate Gratification

Exercise is a long-term investment. Unlike eating a slice of cake or binge-watching a TV series, the benefits of exercise aren’t always immediately noticeable. The effort-to-reward ratio feels skewed, leading us to lose interest before the real benefits become evident.

Social and Psychological Factors

We also need to consider the social and psychological elements. When exercising alone, it’s easy to talk ourselves out of it. Group activities are fantastic, but coordinating schedules can be a nightmare. Moreover, past experiences of failed attempts can create a mental block, making us doubt our ability to succeed this time around.

Making It Easier to Stay Committed

So, how can we overcome these challenges and make exercise a lasting part of our lives?

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Start small and set achievable goals. Instead of vowing to run a marathon, aim for a 30-minute walk each day. Gradual progress is more sustainable and less overwhelming.
  2. Schedule It In: Treat exercise like any other important appointment. Schedule it into your day, and honour that commitment. Consistency is key.
  3. Find Your Joy: Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Find activities you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s dancing, swimming, or a brisk walk in the park. The more fun it is, the more likely you’ll stick with it.
  4. Buddy System: Partner up with a friend. Having someone to exercise with adds accountability and makes the experience more enjoyable.
  5. Mix It Up: Variety is the spice of life. Change your routine regularly to keep things interesting. Try new classes, different routes, or alternate activities to prevent boredom.
  6. Be Kind to Yourself: Don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a workout. Life happens. What’s important is getting back on track and not letting a small setback derail your entire plan.
  7. Focus on the Benefits: Remind yourself of the positive effects of exercise. Better health, more energy, improved mood, and a stronger body are worth the effort.

Kickstarting Your Regime

One powerful strategy to jumpstart your fitness journey is to start with a fitness holiday. A fitness holiday offers a focused environment where the primary goal is to engage in physical activities and embrace a healthier lifestyle. Surrounded by like-minded individuals and guided by professionals, it’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and build habits in an inspiring setting.

As I write this, I’m reminded that the journey to fitness is not just about physical strength but mental resilience. It’s about finding balance, being patient with ourselves, and celebrating small victories. So, let’s re-ignite that enthusiasm, support each other, and stay committed. Here’s to next year’s hiking trip, and maybe even conquering the Spartan Race. We’ve got this! 😉
